The Sound of Breath

Yong Wan Choi 07.07.12

A bowlful of wind, drawn in and let out
a big bowl when busy and panting
half a bowl when lying at rest

A newborn's oil lamp
flickering breath in, breath out

The sound of laughter on a clear day
the sound of sobbing on a cloudy day
the sound of breath blown hoo-hoo on a cold day
the sound of a throat choked tight in anger

Where no one else can see
a hot wind, quietly panting
the sound of breath shared in an embrace, cheek against cheek

Warm or cooled, it stays beside me now
and goes with me to the very end
the sound of life's footsteps
