You in the Mirror

As I look at you, so you look at me

I cannot see behind myself
but you see every backdrop that surrounds me
in the unfolding day, only this very moment
are you my true likeness

I wipe a smudge from my cheek,
button the loosened collar, and look again:
yesterday's man, dear yet strange,
that face where only the sun and moon travel together

In days gone by when you turned your back,
when my insides churned and veins stood out behind my glasses,
you, whom I resented for no reason and grieved over,
it was a heavily clouded day in the mirror's wrinkled light

Now while I go outside
you will wait for me inside the mirror
and one day, when I come back before the mirror
and sit in this place waiting for you,
longing for you, gone forever, before the mirror
I will be wet with tears, dreaming of holding you
