To a man who helps the poor,
pays scholarships so lost young people can learn,
busy turning private business into public service,
a newspaper reporter asks

“How did you become so tremendously successful?”

Sturdy of build, neat in appearance,
homely of face but brimming with laughter,
with eyes that seem not yet to have arrived,
the quiet elder answers

“When I was young,
I had the good fortune to be poor, frail, and unschooled.”
